Friend or Foe

I have no seasons you see,
No contracts with the rich or poor,
For many, I am the friend who comes calling at midnight,
For others, I am the foe who destroys their plans for tomorrow.

I am the inevitable end to a lifetime of pain,
Your one way ticket out of the slums of life,
Why do you detest me still?
You have no reason to fear me,
I am simply ushering you into eternity,
Where your true home awaits.

Perhaps it is because you have missions left unaccomplished;
Husbands to marry,
Children to birth,
Homes to build.

You will all eventually succumb to me,
Whether you are young and full of life,
Or old, wrinkled and toothless,
You will beg me to take you to the land of no return,
And come I will with all pleasure.

Your fear feeds my power,
And I glory in the wait,
I earnestly wait for the day when we finally meet,
The day you decide who I am,
Friend or Foe.

Fine piece! I wonder what kind of friendship we will make of it. Even if all hope is lost, I still believe in miracles.

Ah, Death. Great point-of-view poem. I think for those of us not suffering badly, an unwelcome visitor.
